Dentistry for Kids

Young girl sitting in a dental chair and smiling at her dentist and dental assistantDuring childhood, a child is more susceptible to dental issues than they would be as they get older. Most of the time, it will be due to the high amount of sugar that their diet consists of. By ensuring your child has regular dental appointments with Mukilteo Smiles, it will allow us to monitor their oral health as they grow, and give us the chance to educate you and your child about the dangers of having too much sugar and the affect it has on the teeth.

Why Children's Dentistry is Important

Having your child seen by a dentist from an early age is an important step in maintaining your child's oral health. The dental office staff are also able to educate your child on caring for their teeth and ensuring that their gums remain healthy. As your child enters the dental office, they will be made welcome, which will help them remain relaxed and calm.

The Significance of Children's Dentistry

When it comes to planning oral care, it is always best to start young. This is important when your children's teeth are just beginning to show. It also allows for an initial cleaning to be given that will give your child a head start in gum disease prevention.

Your child's dentist will be able to make suggestions for which type of toothbrush and floss should be used depending on the age of your child. By having the appropriate toothbrush, the teeth will receive the right type of brushing that is not too hard on the teeth. This way the baby teeth will remain as healthy as possible.

When Should a Child Make Their Initial Dentist Visit?

The initial dentist visit should be when your child starts to develop teeth (usually around six months) or by the time they turn one year old. During the exam, the child will be made comfortable as the dentist greets them. The dentist will explain what will take place before and during the exam so that the child can remain relaxed. Following the exam, their teeth will be cleaned.

Sometimes children may experience fear of having a dentist see their teeth, especially the first visit. One method that works to calm and comfort your child involves bringing along a favorite stuffed animal or toy. A treat or a reward after the visit will also help strengthen the appointment and keep it positive in nature.

In the Course of the Appointment

Throughout the dental appointment, your child's dentist will have a plan set that is based on the needs of the child. Following the initial meet and greet and their dental history is obtained, there will also be X-rays taken. As you sit in on the appointment, you will be able to ask pertinent questions concerning your child's dental needs.
